How to Pack Down a Generac V-20 Lighting Tower: A Step-by-Step Guide

Finished your shift? Wrapping up a job site or event? Packing down your Generac V-20 lighting tower correctly is just as important as setting it up. Following the right procedure protects the equipment, ensures it’s ready for its next deployment, and keeps your site safe during demobilisation. Here’s everything you need to know.

Why Proper Pack Down Matters

Skipping steps during pack down is one of the most common causes of equipment damage on hire. A mast lowered incorrectly, stabilisers left extended during transport, or a battery drained from a live isolator — these are avoidable issues that cost time and money. This guide ensures your Generac V-20 portable lighting tower is packed down safely and ready for towing.

Step-by-Step Pack Down Guide

Phase 1 — Lower the Mast

Step 1 — Engage the Handbrake Before doing anything else, confirm the handbrake is fully engaged. The tower must be stationary and secured before the mast is lowered.

Step 2 — Disable Auto-Start Mode (If Active) If the unit has been running in automatic light-sensor mode, you’ll need to switch it back to manual first. Press the button next to the moon icon — it will revert to the hand icon, confirming the unit is now on manual operation. Skipping this step can cause the tower to behave unexpectedly during pack down.

Phase 2 — Power Up to Lower the Mast

If the control panel is currently off, you’ll need to start the engine in order to lower the mast hydraulically.

Step 3 — Power Up the Control Panel Turn the knob on the rear panel from the “0” position to the “G” position.

Step 4 — Start the Engine Press the power button in the top right-hand corner of the control panel. The automatic start sequence will begin and the engine will start after a short pre-heat period.

Step 5 — Lower the Mast Once the engine is running, release the handbrake and use the mast lower buttons adjacent to the control panel to bring the mast down fully. Take your time — don’t rush this step.

Phase 3 — Power Off and Secure

Step 6 — Shut Down the Engine Press the power button on the control panel to initiate the auto-stop sequence. Do not use the emergency stop button for routine shutdown — this is reserved for genuine emergencies only and bypasses the normal cool-down cycle.

Step 7 — Turn Off the Control Panel Once the engine has stopped, rotate the rear panel knob back from “G” to “0”.

Step 8 — Engage the Isolator Open the right-hand side (RHS) door and engage the isolator. This is an important step — leaving the isolator live while the tower is in storage or transit will drain the battery.

Step 9 — Stow the Stabilisers Retract all four stabilisers fully before moving or towing the unit. Never tow a lighting tower with stabilisers extended.

Ready for Transport

Once all steps are complete, your Generac V-20 is safely packed down and ready for towing. For towing safety requirements and maintenance procedures, always refer to the full operator’s manual supplied with the unit.
